5 Tips for a Warm & Comfortable Home

  • 5 Tips for a Warm & Comfortable Home

    March 12, 2018

Have you ever been without heat on a cold fall or winter night? If you have, then you absolutely understand the importance of a well maintained and functioning furnace! If you haven’t been without heat in the winter you’ll want to pay close attention to the information below, so you don’t fall victim to a poorly maintained furnace.

In fact, you might be surprised to see how many of these tasks you already know!

    1. Clear the Space

If you have a utility room, you know how easy it is to use it as a catch-all for the stuff that won’t fit in your basement or garage. It seems like common sense to toss a few boxes or cleaning products in there so your visitors don’t see them, but you’re better off if you don’t do it. Furnaces don’t need a lot of watchful care, but you do need to be able to reach them once in a while since the burning of fuel is usually involved to create the heat you enjoy, you definitely want to clear out the paints, solvents and anything else that could catch a flame.

    1. Replace Those Furry Air Filters*

Now that you can actually reach the furnace, it’s time to change the filter. This is one of the easiest things you can do to help your furnace work great for less money. The air filter is usually  made out of paper and/or thin wire mesh, and sits inside the furnace. If it looks like a flat, furry animal straight out of a Harry Potter book, it’s too dirty and needs to go. If you don’t change your furnace filter for a long time, the build up in the filter has the potential to catch fire, so make sure that your home is safe as well as clean by changing the filter regularly. Replace it with one just like it, about every three months.

    1. Schedule Regular Maintenance

Almost anything else that you might need to do with the furnace is probably better done by a trained expert. Professional maintenance may sound really involved, but it could be less expensive and take less time than a dinner out. Think of it as an investment in your own year-round comfort that you don’t have to do yourself. When you schedule regular service, a certified technician will visit your home and:

    • Perform a complete evaluation of your heating system
    • Address any concerns you may have
    • Inspect the health and functionality of your furnace
    • Notify you of any areas of concern and present you with several solutions

It will be done before you know it, and your furnace will be good to go for another year.

    1. Keep an Eye (and an Ear) on Furnace Function

When you get a new furnace and have it professionally installed by a skilled heating technician, you will get the best output from the furnace at that time. As the years pass, you can keep to a similar level with good maintenance. Eventually, your furnace function will start to go downhill. If your furnace is starting to get up there in years or making a rattling noise, you might stand to benefit more from buying a new one. The condition of the furnace usually determines it, so the more you know, the better decision you’ll make.

    1. Trust Your Gut (and Your Goosebumps)

It’s your home and you have to live in it, so you might as well be comfortable. In this respect, you are the expert of your domain. This means that you can often find a quick solution to furnace problems just by paying attention and acting on your observations. You don’t have to be a professional to know that your furnace seems to be turning on all the time, but the house is never warm enough. All you have to do is make the choice to call for service when your furnace situation isn’t working well for you. Getting repairs quickly is better for your furnace, and your wallet. It is so much easier and less expensive to inspect a working furnace than it is to fix a broken one.

Your furnace might be the only thing standing between you and a frosty oblivion, so it deserves a little easy care. With a bit of work from you and the experts at Mainstream, you will be toasty warm all winter long.
