Early Fall Maintenance Tips for Your Home
It may seem like winter is still months away, but it will be here before you know it! The leaves are changing color and will soon begin to fall… You need to make sure your North Idaho home is prepared for the seasonal changes! Early fall maintenance can make your fall and winter seasons easy by ensuring your home is prepped and ready to go!
Before the temperatures drop for good, make sure the chill can’t get inside! Check your insulation and weather strips for any gaps or holes. Even a small gap can increase your energy bills! Another proactive measure to take while you’re doing early fall maintenance, is insulating your pipes. Wrapping them in foam insulation can prevent your pipes from freezing and bursting. A burst pipe can then unfreeze and cause a leak in your home, leading to countless other problems.
Check your Smoke and CO Detectors
This is a good time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and possibly change your batteries. To ensure your smoke and CO detectors are working properly year round, you should be checking them monthly, and updating the batteries at least once a year.
Get your HVAC Half-Yearly Inspection
Now is the time to schedule the half-yearly inspection of your system. Call Mainstream Electric, Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing so we can make sure your system is ready to power through the winter months! We check the entire system to be sure it is working properly before you turn it on each season, regardless of age.
Equip your Home
Perhaps one of the easiest ways to save energy on heating in the winter is to cozy up with some extra blankets. A good rule is at least one per room, meaning there is always a blanket within reach! We also suggest stocking the pantry with hot cocoa mix and soup for those extra cold days! Another home necessity before winter is your snow shovel, ice scraper, and driveway salt. You can find these winter necessities at your local hardware store!
Outside your Home
Clean your gutters to keep water flowing smoothly, trim branches that could fall, inspect your roof for leaks (or potential leaks) and turn off your faucets so they don’t freeze and/or burst!
Don’t Forget your Lawn
Raking leaves sounds like a chore, and as a necessary evil, we highly recommend you do it, so the leaves don’t kill your grass. However you can make it fun! Bring out the kids or the dogs to run around in the leaves. The kids can even help rake the piles (before and after jumping in them). The next step would be to aerate your soil so that oxygen and fertilizer can get to the roots of the grass. Fertilizer is necessary this time of year to keep your lawn nourished throughout the winter. Finally, lay down more seeds. Avoid weeds by adding more grass – if there isn’t room, the weeds can’t grow.
Early fall maintenance can be a hassle, but there are tasks on this list to ensure your household’s safety throughout the fall and winter seasons. While most of this list is up to you, Mainstream is here when you need us! Call to schedule your fall HVAC maintenance today!
